My Thoughts: Swallow Your Pride…

The story of Jonah continues to teach me some very important life lessons.  The four main points of this story for me today center around the action of Jonah in the four chapters of this story. 1.  Jonah is running from God (Ch.1) – about pride 2. Jonah is running to God (Ch. 2) – about repentance 3. Jonah is running for God (Ch. 3) – about obedience 4. President Lincoln’s petition for prayer…

Might I be so bold as to ask our current politicians in Washington to read these words of wisdom and act accordingly? We have been the recipients of the choicest bounties of Heaven. We have been preserved, these many years, in peace and prosperity. We have grown in numbers, wealth and power, as no other nation has ever grown. But we have forgotten God. We have forgotten the gracious hand which preserved us in peace, and multiplied and enriched and strengthened us; and we have vainly imagined, in the deceitfulness of our hearts, that all these blessings were produced by some superior wisdom and virtue of our own. What are you passionate about?

Last Sunday the message centered around Nehemiah’s activity of building the wall around Jerusalem. Nehemiah became burdened by the need for this wall to reestablish a holy people set apart for God’s purposes.  His passion became the fuel to make it happen.  In fact, as we read in the Scriptures this wall was finished in 52 days!  What passion!  What energy!  What an accomplishment!
